The cleanest cities in Europe in terms of air quality in 2020 and 2021 were Umeå in Sweden and Faro and Funchal in Portugal. This is shown by the updated data viewer on air quality in European cities published today by the European Environment Agency (EEA).

The viewer categorises the air quality as:

good for particulate matter values that do not exceed the World Health Organisation's annual average value of 5 μg/m3
moderate for values above 5 and not above 10 μg/m3
moderate if the values are above 10 and not above 15 μg/m3
poor for values above 15 and up to 25 μg/m3 and
very poor for values at and above the EU limit value of 25 μg/m3.

Berlin is ranked 217th out of 375 (as of 13 september 2024) with air quality classified as ‘moderate’ (annual average of 11 μg/m3).
